Ultimate Academy Art Association

The Ultimate Akademie was an art project in Cologne that was dedicated to the mediation of contemporary art . Between 1987 and 1999 the organization office of the non-profit association was located at Mozartstrasse 60 in Cologne, from 1999 to 2009 in Weyertal 84. Not least because of its founder Al Hansen and the cooperation with artist colleagues such as Benjamin Patterson , Phillip Corner , Dick Higgins and Takako Saito was the link with Fluxus . Numerous collaborations have been developed from this network, also internationally.

history

The UA was founded by Al Hansen and Lisa Cieslik. The name refers to an idea by Al Hansen to found an academy in which all members are themselves professors. In 1987 the office at Mozartstrasse 60 in Cologne opened and the Ultimate Akademie opened its first official office.

In the first few years the focus was mainly on group exhibitions. In addition to thematic presentations, the main task was to stage the rooms in Mozartstrasse for joint action and performance evenings.

From 1990 on, interest shifted to realizing individual presentations. In the "One Artist Show" concept, selected members of the Ultimate Academy will be presented with their work.

In 1992 the Cologne dust office was opened in cooperation with Claudia Pütz, Bonn. As a result, a publication appears under the name DER STILLSTAND , which appears regularly every year until 2012. In addition to the exhibition activities, the focus is also on organizing courses. Another focus is the participation in Piazza Virtuale, a media project of Documenta IX . The members of the Ultimate Akademie performed regular performance activities over the duration of the Doukumenta via an “entry point” in the Moltkerei art space in Cologne.

Another focus was the opening of the “Ultimate Akademie Video Cafe”, which presented a video collection from international performance and action artists. In the years 1991–1995 the “ultimate lectures” regularly offered courses and lectures, such as B. "door-to-door-sales" by Alice Kinser and Andrew Walther, who were positioned between artistic action and standard training opportunities.

In 1994 the Ultimate Academy started a cooperation with the Urania Theater in Cologne. The performance evening was realized as a pilot event. Around 50 performers had the opportunity to present their performance in just one minute each. As a result, monthly themed performance evenings were organized by the Ultimate Academy in the Urania Theater from 1995 to 1996. The interactive performance menu also took place in the Urania Theater in 1995, a combination of permanent performance appearances and a menu offer. Under the working title "One day of my life in a box", the Ultimate Academy invited around 120 artists from various network structures to take part in a communication project. The classic form of the mail type was used to enable a real, practicable dialogue between cultures. With the two ART bingo events in 1995 and 1996, the Ultimate Academy showed its basic experimental character. An exhibition lottery realized two exhibitions as an overall concept from officially approved ticket sales, from drawing to vernissage to catalog creation.

The first ten years of the UA's activities ended with the presentation of the “ultinet.art” catalog in the Chapel Art Center in Cologne.

After Al Hansen

In 1999 the organization office was relocated from Mozartstrasse to the new rooms in Weyertal 84. From there, the work of the institute was taken into a new, further phase. In addition to the further development of the publication work of the "Standstill" project, it was above all performance concepts that were now in the foreground. An exchange with the Artoll laboratory in Bedburg in 2000 gave the impetus to expand the performance network, as well as the cooperation "Graz-Performance" with KAVN, Graz, which organized an exchange with the UA in 2003 in cooperation with the European Capital of Culture. A total of 24 performance evenings took place at nine Cologne art venues (including Moltkerei, Rachel Haferkamp Gallery, BBK Cologne), each of which was documented on video and presented two days later in Graz.

Until 2012, regular performance events for the annual publication of the “Standstill” magazine took place in cooperation with the Rachel Haferkamp gallery in Cologne. Overall, the Ultimate Academy has helped shape the development of the Cologne art scene over the past 25 years. In addition to the numerous activities in the gallery rooms on Mozartstrasse in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was above all the performance concepts that have in part been shaping the style up to the present day. As a network, the influence developed beyond national borders and contributed to the positioning of Cologne as an art metropolis in the 1990s.

Since 2019, documents, photographs and video recordings of the Ultimate Akademie have been archived by the Central Archive for German and International Art Market Research ZADIK.
