Origin of name

"ULVAC" is a combination of "UL" from "Ultimate" and "VAC" from "Vacuum". The company pursues the goal of becoming the "Ultimate in Vacuum Technology".

Japan Vacuum Engineering Co. Ltd. was founded in August 1952 (capital: 6 million yen). At first, a wide variety of vacuum accessories were imported and resold. The first in 1955 was the Omori domestic equipment manufacturing facility, followed by the Yokohama facility in 1959. From 1960 onwards, large vacuum devices for heavy industry such as vacuum melting furnaces and vacuum distillation devices were developed. In 1964 the first overseas cooperation was established in Hong Kong. In 1968 the headquarters in Chigasaki was completed.

In 1972 the “Institute for Super Materials” was founded as Ulvac's first full research institute. In 1975, Ulvac received an order from IBM for the "SYSTEM 731", the world's first computer-controlled, fully automated vacuum evaporation system. In 1986 the “MCH Series”, the world's first multi-chamber sputtering system, was developed, followed in 1988 by the “SHD Series”, a sputtering system for manufacturing hard drives.

In 1990 the "Fuji Susono Plant" was founded as a dedicated facility for production facilities for semiconductors . One of the cornerstones of the FPD business in 1992 was the introduction of the special LCD production line of the "SMD Series". The establishment of a production base in China and a service station in South Korea followed in 1995.

In 2001 the Institute for Semiconductor and Electronics Technologies was founded. The company name was changed to ULVAC, Inc. 2004 was another significant year in the company's history: New headquarters buildings were completed for the development / prototype production of large LCD devices. In addition, the first listed shares were listed in the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and a further production base for full vacuum equipment was established in Suzhou, China. This was followed by a production facility for large LCD production plants in South Korea in 2005 and another in Taiwan in 2006. In 2007 the Chiba Tomisato plant for the development and manufacture of materials was established. A supermaterial institute was established in South Korea in 2011. In 2012 the company celebrated its 60th anniversary. The “Future Technology Research Laboratory” was founded in 2015, and in 2016 Ulvac began manufacturing production systems for large displays. In 2018 the company celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Chigasaki headquarters.
