Umbraco is an open source content management system (CMS) for editing and managing dynamic websites , written in the high-level language C # and based on ASP.NET technology. Microsoft SQL Server is primarily used as the database, but from version 4 MySQL and VistaDB can also be used.

As free framework usable web application Umbraco was established in 2000 by the Danish software developer Niels Hartvig. Since then, the system has been further developed by the author, a core team and a very active community.

License model

The CMS Umbraco is under a dual license model. On the one hand, Umbraco can be used free of charge under an open source license and also expanded, on the other hand, there is the possibility of purchasing a commercial license with additional rights and support services from the Danish company Umbraco A / S, based in Odense, Denmark.

The free license model is covered for large parts of Umbraco by the MIT license, while certain product and trademark-relevant parts are protected by the Umbraco open source license .

The name Umbraco and the Umbraco logo are registered trademarks of Niels Hartvig.

development

Umbraco's development began in 2000 as proprietary software, and in 2004 it switched to an open source license. Since then, the project, the number of active developers working in the core team and the community have grown steadily. According to Umbraco, there were over 25,000 installed and active Umbraco websites in April 2007 ; the number doubled to 50,000 websites by May 2008. In June 2016 Umbraco founder Niels Hartvig announced at least 360,935 active installations at the annual Umbraco conference CodeGarden in Odense, Denmark. The number of active Umbraco installations is currently 502,567 with almost 222,000 active community members. The number of extensions, called "packages", is estimated at around 1200.

Umbraco is constantly being developed by its committed community. From version 7, for example, the entire responsive backend was renewed using AngularJS . In early 2016, "Umbraco As a Service" was also launched, a cloud hosting service based on Microsoft Azure . The current major version Umbraco 8 was released on February 26, 2019. With "Umbraco Heartcore", Umbraco has also had a headless offer since December 2, 2019.

Community in Germany

In addition to the international CodeGarden conference, there are numerous local conferences around the world. The official community conference for the German-speaking area is the Umbraco Festival Germany.

Others

  • The name Umbraco is a common name for an Allen key in Scandinavian countries . Umbraco stands for a "universal tool" for assembling websites.
  • Ironically, the name is based on a typo, the correct Scandinavian name for the tool is Unbrako , which means "unbreakable".
