A reverse image (also: top-bottom-image ) uses mental routines to assign details to a meaningful whole. Usually the picture is rotated 180 degrees and then shows a different picture. Often there are opposing pairings such as old and young, man and woman or man and animal.

Reversal images are related to the anthropomorphic and zoomorphic picture puzzle .

The best-known reversal images were created by the Italian Giuseppe Arcimboldo in the 16th century. Also Honoré Daumier is best known for his turn heads. Also famous are the reversal pictures by Gustave Verbeek , who created an entire reversal comic from six individual pictures.
