Undernet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Undernet is an IRC network . It arose in the summer of 1993 as a result of disputes between the operators of the EFnet .

The makers of the Undernet attached great importance to better control of the processes in the network. A dedicated server software was developed for this purpose, which is also used by other networks as an undernet-ircu. It was Undernet programmers who introduced the timestamp patch with which every user action was registered. For the first time, it was possible to assign new channels or nicknames to a user and possibly better track illegal activities on the Internet.

Channels can be registered on the Undernet, but not nicknames. A prerequisite for the registration of channels is a lively operation and 5 participants who support the future channel manager. Channels with the main purpose of distributing illegal copies are not registered and do not receive any support from the administrators. Another feature is mode x , with which registered users can hide their host mask .

There are servers in 35 countries, including five in the Netherlands, two in Switzerland and Austria. There is no Undernet server in Germany. The main languages on the Undernet are English, Spanish and Romanian. Contact points for German-speaking chatters are the #germany and #deutschland channels.
