The União Democrática Nacional (German National Democratic Union ), UDN for short , was a conservative party in Brazil that existed between 1945 and 1965. During this time it was one of the largest and most important parties in the country.

history

After the end of the Estado Novo , the establishment of political parties was allowed again in Brazil. On April 7, 1945, the UDN was formed, which represented conservative and economically liberal positions. Domestically, they faced the still politically active ex-dictator Getúlio Vargas with strong opposition and championed strict anti-communism .

The UDN supported Jânio Quadro's presidency in 1961 and placed most of the ministers in his cabinet, but distanced itself from him shortly afterwards. The party leadership, which had good relations with the Brazilian military , supported the 1964 military coup . Most of the UDN members switched to the newly founded state party Aliança Renovadora Nacional .
