Unión Republicana (Spain)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A party called Unión Republicana existed twice in Spain, first in 1903 and then again in 1934.

The Unión Republicana (UR, dt. Republican Union ) was a Spanish center-right party during the Second Spanish Republic and the Spanish Civil War .

The UR was significantly influenced by one person and was also founded and directed by him. Diego Martínez Barrio was just like Alejandro Lerroux a member of the liberal-centrist Partido Republicano Radical , which had entered into an alliance with the CEDA in 1934 to protect the republic from an impending revolution, as they claimed. Following allegations of corruption, the government dissolved in 1935 and elections were held for February 1936. The PRR was split into two parts, the Lerroux party, which remained loyal to the right-wing camp, and the Unión Republicana under Martinez Barrio, which joined the Popular Front. The electorate of the UR came mainly from the ranks of freelancers and business people. Geographically, the UR had its small following in the coastal regions of the east. Ideologically, one of the main demands was the strict separation of church and state.
