Unified Propulsion System

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Unified Propulsion System (UPS), to German about pooled drive system , describes the design concept, the drive system and the position control to integrate a satellite in a unit.

Usually a launcher places a geostationary satellite in preliminary geotransfer orbit . From there, an apogee motor takes it to its final geostationary orbit . Once there, the satellite only experiences minor attitude controls . The apogee motor is no longer needed. In the UPS concept, common components of both drive systems are combined, especially the fuel tanks and controls. The result is a compact drive unit with a lower mass than a two-component system.
