Uniküla (German Unniküll ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural municipality Valga (until 2017 Õru ) in the Valga district .

Location and history

Uniküla has 50 inhabitants (as of 2005). The village is 16 kilometers from the Estonian-Latvian border town of Valga ( Walk ). The river Väike-Emajõgi ( Little Embach ) flows through Uniküla .

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia there was a Red Army missile base at the site . Strategic medium-range missiles were stationed there.

Personalities

The best- known son of the place is the Estonian poet Friedrich Kuhlbars (1841-1924). A memorial stone now stands on the site of the former school building in which he was born. The school house burned down in 1856.
