Union of National Writers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Union of National Writers was founded in 1934. The German PEN center had previously been dissolved by the National Socialists . As a result, all writers living in Germany had to leave the international PEN club . The Union of National Writers was intended as a kind of counter-PEN. Hanns Johst and Gottfried Benn in particular were committed to this writers' association, of which they became president and vice-president. Another vice-president was Rainer Schlösser . According to Joseph Goebbels ' plans , the Union of National Writers and the European Writers ' Association, which was also founded in Germany, were to compete with the PEN Club and later even take over its function.
