Unis cornus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unis Cornus is a German music group that makes medieval music .

origin of the name

The name "Unis Cornus" is derived from the Latin Unicornis (= unicorn ), but can also mean "United Army Wing ". The second meaning fades into the background, however, since the minstrels from Unis Cornus use a unicorn as a logo on their flags. Thus, strictly speaking, the name is not an existing name, but a fantasy name.

Music genre

The music of Unis Cornus is characterized by strong harsh percussion - rhythms and catchy melodies of hurdy-gurdy and violin. It can be classified in the category of "medieval folk".

Due to the naturally relatively quiet melody instruments, Unis Cornus prefer to perform with amplification. Even if there are purely unamplified appearances in which only very little percussion is used, Unis Cornus' music only develops to full bloom with the use of the complete percussion.

The artists deal with historical themes in their works. It is primarily about the life of the individual and the community in the Middle Ages. With the content of songs such as “Die Nacht” or “Ich will Dich”, the group tries to illustrate the completely different living conditions in this time period. From wars in the Middle Ages to everyday events. The most varied of points of view are dealt with from different points of view of the different social strata of the time.

The artists perform regionally, nationally as well as abroad. Examples are Amerang, Mannheim, Kufstein, but also regular appearances in the Black Forest, Palatinate, Hesse, Franconia and Lower Bavaria regions.

history

The group was founded in 2001 by Erik Krappmann, Matthias Baus and Tobias Betz. All three musicians played together in the formation “Midnight Come” even before the formation, in which the topic of “medieval music” also played an important role. In contrast to Unis Cornus, however, “Midnight Come” produced melody rock with a medieval influence. Unis Cornus does not play medieval standards, but composes itself. Less than a year after it was founded, the group has developed an initial concept that is still unfinished, but capable of being used on the stage, and can present a 45-minute program.

In 2004 the minstrels changed the stage structure away from the classic drums (drummer sitting in the second row) towards the final stage structure. From this year the musicians will be on stage side by side. The stage structure appears more symmetrical and can be adapted more flexibly to different stage conditions. But this change also brought difficulties. Many of the group's pieces had to be rearranged because the “new” concept involved changing playing techniques. This year the musicians produced their first CD "tar", on which, among other things, "an army" was in the studio and Melanie Christians also participated as a guest musician.

In order to have enough time for new songs and internal projects, the group limited their performance volume to a maximum of ten events per year in 2008. At the same time, the band received reinforcement from the young percussionist Alexander Krappmann, who drums guest appearances at various events.

In 2010 the CD “Through the Night” was released. At the same time, the previous guest drummer Alexander Krappmann was firmly integrated into the group.
