United States Adopted Names Council

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The United States Adopted Names Council or USAN Council is a US organization based in Chicago whose job it is to support the US health care system by suggesting simple, informative and unambiguous non- proprietary names for existing drugs. The naming is based on the pharmaceutical or chemical properties of the corresponding substances.

The aim is to spread these names worldwide, so that in addition to various national institutions and organizations such as the American approval authority FDA , cooperation is also carried out with the International Nonproprietary Name (INN) program of the WHO .

The council consists of five members, one of which is provided by the three sponsors - the American Medical Association (AMA), the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP), and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). One member is provided by the US FDA, the fifth council member is not bound.

The council mainly does its work through correspondence and meets twice a year to discuss important issues.
