The United States Army Pigeon Service was a division of the US Army during World War II . She dealt with the training and the use of carrier pigeons for military purposes.

The US Army Pigeon Service consisted of 3,000 soldiers and 150 officers who were responsible for 54,000 carrier pigeons. The carrier pigeons were used in the field of the ground forces , the navy and the air force . Some pigeons have been specially trained by the US Army Pigeon Service to fly at night in order to better avoid enemy fire. The most famous carrier pigeon of the US Army Pigeon Service was GI Joe , who was the only one to be awarded the Dickin Medal .
