The United States Special Operations Command North , USSOCNORTH or SOCNORTH for short, is a sub-unit of NORTHCOM . It was at the request of NORTHCOM and SOCOM the Defense requested and approved on 31 December 2012. The command arose from the Special Operations Division , SOD for short , a staff position in the J3 Operations Directorate of NORTHCOM. While the SOD was primarily responsible for the coordination of special units within the NORTHCOM and also acted as a coordination point for the SOCOM, the SOCNORTH is to be used increasingly in the fight against drugs in Mexico. Joint exercises by American and Mexican special forces are planned for this purpose. The first in command was Rear Adm. Kerry M. Metz and the current in command is Brigade General Christopher M. Burns . Its headquarters are at Peterson AFB in Colorado . The SOCNORTH organizes the anti-terror maneuver Vital Archer every year .
