The Peterson Air Force Base (short Peterson AFB ) is a base of the US Air Force . The base is located in El Paso County ( Colorado ) near Colorado Springs . The base was created at the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport on May 6, 1942. On December 13, 1942 it was renamed from Colorado Springs Army Air Base to Peterson Army Air Base in memory of a military aviator who died in a plane crash on the base.
The headquarters of the Air Force Space Command , to which the North American Aerospace Defense Command is subordinate, is also located in Peterson Air Force Base . The United States Special Operations Command North is also headquartered at the AFB.
The "Peterson Air Force Base" is also known under the name "Norad" from the US action blockbuster " Independence Day ". Also known is the nearby Cheyenne Mountain , where the former headquarters of the "Air Force Space Command" was stationed. This military base is from the successful military science fiction - television series command SG-1 - Stargate known.
