Universe Sandbox is a simulation game and educational software. Players can observe the effect of gravity on various objects (including asteroids , planets , suns and many more) in space . Complex simulations of the solar system or other various predefined scenarios can be chosen. The original Universe Sandbox was only available on Windows devices; the successor Universe Sandbox² was released in 2017 for macOS and Linux .

Universe Sandbox was mainly programmed by Dan Dixon. He worked on the project for over 15 years; he published the full version in May 2008. Dixon worked full-time on the project from 2010 and founded Giant Army the following year. Since then, he has hired eight more designers.

Simulations

Realistic and fictional simulations can be found in the game. The realistic simulations include the solar system , in which there are 8 planets , 5 dwarf planets , 160 moons and hundreds of different asteroids. Futuristic simulations show the collision between the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy, which could occur in 3.8–4.5 billion years.

reception

PC Gamer UK's Duncan Geere rated the game an 84/100; he spoke positively of the game: “Universe Sandbox will not change your life. It won't make you cry and it won't be on your most played Steam list. But if you like the idea of an interactive orrery that you can destroy and restore, there is no better way to spend £ 6.  "

Jules of the Internet magazine Wired said in her review: "I've seen some programs that allow you to explore the universe, but none was as gripping as Universe Sandbox."

Universe Sandbox²

The team started a complete overhaul of Universe Sandbox in 2014. Some new features have been added, including atmospheres on planets, procedurally generated textures, a better collision system, procedural details in rings, visualization of black holes and much more. With an update released on November 16, 2018, Steam Workshop features were made possible.
