The University of Fukushima ( Jap. 福島大学 , Fukushima daigaku ) is a state university in Japan . The campus is located in Fukushima in Fukushima Prefecture .

history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of three state schools:

  • Fukushima Business School ( 福島 経 済 専 門 学校 , Fukushima keizai semmon gakkō )
  • Fukushima Normal School ( 福島 師範学校 , Fukushima shihan gakkō , founded in 1874) and
  • Youth Normal School Fukushima ( 福島 青年 師範学校 , Fukushima his shihan gakkō , founded in 1920).

The Fukushima Business School was founded in 1921 as the Fukushima Higher Business School ( 福島 高等 商業 学校 , Fukushima kōtō shōgyō gakkō ). It was the only state higher commercial school in the Tōhoku region and was renamed Fukushima Business School in 1944. Its former Moriai campus was used by Fukushima University until 1981 and is now the seat of the Fukushima Prefectural Library ( 37 ° 46 ′ 3.6 ″  N , 140 ° 27 ′ 25.7 ″  E ).

Fukushima University first had the liberal arts and economics faculties . In 1966 the Faculty of Liberal Arts was renamed the Faculty of Education. In 1979 what is now the Kanayagawa campus reopened and the faculties moved into the campus. In 1987 the Faculty of Administrative and Social Sciences was founded. In 2004 the university reorganized the faculties: two clusters ( 学 群 , gakugun ) were newly established, and one of them included the four faculties ( 学 類 , gakurui ).
