The University of Oñati (Basque: Oñatiko Unibertsitatea, Spanish: Universidad de Oñate) was founded in 1540 by the humanistically minded Bishop Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola of Oñate under the name Universitas Sancti Spiritus and had its first seat in Hernani . In 1548 it was moved to Oñati, where the university building had been built since 1543 under the patronage of Charles V , today the most important Renaissance building in the Basque Country .

The subjects of study were theology , law , canon law , arts and medicine . In the 19th century, in the Revolution of 1868, it became the Universidad Libre (Free University), under the Carlist the Real y Pontíficia Universidad Vasco-Navarra (Royal and Pontifical Basque-Navarre University). It was closed in 1901 after the Jesuit -directed Universidad de Deusto (Basque: Deustuko Unibertsitatea) had been founded in the Deusto district of Bilbo ( Bilbao ) in 1886 .

Today the university building of Oñati houses the Instituto Internacional de Sociología Jurídica / International Institute for the Sociology of Law .
