University of Natal

The University of Natal (English: University of Natal ) was a state university in the province of Natal ( South Africa ) with locations in Pietermaritzburg and Durban , which existed from 1910 to 2003.

A predecessor institution was Natal University College, which was founded on December 11, 1909 in Pietermaritzburg and in 1931 set up a second campus in Durban. The specialist areas at that time were agricultural and engineering sciences . In 1947 a medical college for non-white students was added. On March 15, 1949, Natal University College officially received university status and was named University of Natal from then on. The range of subjects was gradually expanded in the following years. In 1993, Natal Ridge on Alexander I Island in Antarctica was named after the university.

The University of Natal was merged with the University of Durban-Westville into the University of KwaZulu-Natal on January 1, 2004 .
