The University of Ryūkyū ( Japanese 琉球 大学 , Ryūkyū daigaku , English University of the Ryukyus , short: Ryūdai ( 琉 大 )) is a state university on the Ryūkyū Islands in Japan . The main campus is located in Nishihara in Okinawa Prefecture .

history

Before the Pacific War there was no college / college in Okinawa Prefecture. During the war, Okinawa Normal School ( 沖 縄 師範学校 , Okinawa shihan gakkō , founded 1880) and Okinawa Youth Normal School ( 沖 縄 青年 師範学校 , Okinawa its shihan gakkō , founded 1935) received technical school status, but in 1945 they were destroyed.

Ryūkyū University was founded in 1950 by the US civil government of the Ryūkyū Islands . The university was initially located in the former Shuri Castle (in Naha , 26 ° 13 ′ 1.1 ″  N , 127 ° 43 ′ 9.7 ″  E ) and consisted of six faculties: English language, education, social sciences, natural sciences, agricultural sciences , and Applied Liberal Arts . From 1966 to 1972 it was carried by the government of the Ryūkyū Islands (GRI).

On May 15, 1972, when the Ryūkyū Islands were returned to Japan, the university became one of the Japanese state universities. In 1977 the current Sembaru campus was reopened, and over the years the faculties moved from Shuri Castle to Sembaru (then Shuri Castle could be rebuilt). In 1984 the Faculty of Medicine (founded in 1979) moved to the new Nishihara campus.
