Unto This Last

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unto This Last is a work by the English artist, writer and social theorist John Ruskin . It was published in 1862 as a book publication of four magazine articles, initially met with heavy criticism and was little read. It later developed into one of the most influential socially critical works and was translated into many languages, including by Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarati , who also took on suggestions for content.

In essence, Unto This Last is a criticism of the " soi-disant science of political economy " (Ruskin) Smith and Millscher characteristics with its elements of egoistic utility maximization, the laissez-faire market principle and the increase of capital as an end in itself. In contrast, Ruskin pleads for a value, benefit and people orientation of economic activity.
