Upstate (literally "upper state") is used in the United States , especially on the east coast, to refer to the part of a state that is north and away from the ocean :

• Upstate New York , the most common use
• Upstate South Carolina , northeastern part of the state
• Upstate Maine

A special situation prevails in California , where upstate California is not the very long inland region but - regardless of its distance from the sea - the northern part.
