A ureteral stenosis is a narrowing ( stenosis ) of the ureter , even Harnleiterstenose called.

In a narrower sense, the term "ureteral stenosis" describes a congenital ureteral narrowing , in contrast to stricture as an acquired narrowing of the ureter.

Classification

Depending on the localization of the stenosis, a distinction can be made:

  • at the transition from the renal pelvis to the ureter
    • Ureteral stenosis , also ureteropelvic stenosis or subpelvic stenosis , pyeloureteral obstruction
  • in the course of the ureter
    • retrocaval ureter (congenital malformation with abnormal course of the ureter)
    • retroiliac ureter (congenital malformation with abnormal course of the ureter)
    • retroperitonaeal by compression in retroperitoneal fibrosis (Ormond's disease) or tumors
  • in the area where it joins the urinary bladder

In the context of syndromes

In individual syndromes , ureteral stenosis can also appear as a criterion or clinical manifestation, for example in McKusick-Kaufman syndrome .

Differential diagnosis

Outflow obstructions by ureter valves (transverse folds of the mucous membrane with smooth muscles in the lumen) are to be distinguished.
