Ursula boat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ursula boats ( navicula S. Ursulae ) emerged from the 13th century in many places as brotherhoods under the patronage of St. Ursula .

history

The first Ursuline fraternities came into being around 1300 in Italy, from where the Ursuline order later originated. Especially in the city of Cologne , where Ursula and her 11,000 companions, according to legend, were martyred , several “ Ursula boats” were created, of which a brotherhood that was founded in the 15th century (probably 1445) still exists today.

Church of St. Ursula in Cologne

The brotherhood at the Ursula Church in Cologne, which still exists today, has over 500 members who meet annually for a general meeting on the fourth Sunday of Lent and for the Ursula Festival Week in October. During the Ursula Festival Week there is a procession with the shrine of St. Ursula instead. A brotherhood candle is consecrated and lit in the Church of St. Ursula and will burn for a year until the next Ursula festival.
