Lists on the subject

The Urumi also ( Ind. ) Surul Pattai is a weapon from the Indian martial art Kalaripayattu .

description

The Urumi consists of one or more flexible blades that are attached to a wooden handle . A bracket is attached to the handle to protect the hand from injuries by the enemy and your own weapon . The blades are made from thin spring steel strips and are only lightly hardened so that they remain flexible. The outer edges of the belts are sharpened. In use, the Urumi is drawn around the body in a circle and slammed like a whip . Handling is difficult because the blades can easily hit the wearer themselves. Beginners start training with a long piece of cloth. The advantage of the Urumiis that shields do not provide complete cover, as the flexible blades can strike over the edge of the shield if they strike the shield and injure the person wearing the shield. To carry them, they are rolled up and secured with a rope or leather strap. The Urumi are still used today in the Indian martial art Kalaripajattu (also Kalari or Kalaripajat).
