rxvt is a terminal emulation for the X Window System ("X") and is intended to be a replacement for xterm with reduced functionality and therefore more memory-saving . “Urxvt” (or “rxvt-unicode”) is a clone of “rxvt” which, unlike the original, internally processes all data in Unicode . With the spread of Compiz and Beryl , "urxvt" gained new meaning because it is compatible with the newly introduced transparency of X.
