Lists on the subject

The Utap is a shield of the Dayak on Kalimantan in Indonesia.

description

The Utap , also called Prongin , is a long shield of which there are different versions. The ends are usually rounded, but they can also be made pointed and stepped. It can be made entirely from wood, but also from rattan , tree bark reinforced with wood or rattan, or from wood covered with rattan.

In the version, which is made entirely of wood, the handle and the shield are made from one piece, which gives the shield a high level of stability.

A lotus flower is often painted on for decoration . The Utap is a traditional shield of the See-Dayak, which has not been used by them since the beginning of the 20th century . Among the Land-Dayak, the Bidayuh , the shield is called prongin .
