Uxel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uxel is an old type of ship in the Mediterranean . It was built by the Moors in the 14th century and used in the battles against the Spaniards around 1340. The ship, probably a combination of a rowing and sailing ship, was about 50 m long and 10 m wide and is considered the forerunner of the Mediterranean galeas . It had superstructures on the bow and stern and in the middle of the ship. In addition to the crew, around 50 horses or around 280 armed soldiers could be transported. With the emergence of the more modern galleries in the Mediterranean, the Uxel building was abandoned again.
