VMPS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

VMPS (VLAN Management Policy Server) is a Cisco - Switch , which the association between MAC address and VLAN managed by network terminals. The VLAN Query Protocol (VQP) is used for queries from decentralized switches to the VMPS master .

With the help of VMPS, ports are dynamically assigned to a VLAN based on the MAC address of the connected device. This means that a device can be connected to any point in the network and is automatically assigned to the assigned VLAN by the switch. In the simplest case, administration is carried out using a text file that is uploaded to the VMPS master via TFTP . Switch ports to which a device with an unknown MAC address is connected can either be blocked or assigned to a special fallback or guest VLAN and thus isolated from the productive network.

Other VMPS servers

FreeNAC is an open source tool that uses OpenVMPS to communicate with the switches, but uses a MySQL database to manage the assignments and can thus provide various other functions that are particularly helpful for larger environments.
