The locomotives of the VR series A4 of Valtionrautatiet (VR) were 2'B-Tender locomotives, originally from the rautatie Hangon came.
history
After there had been plans for a railway connection between the Baltic Sea port of Hanko and the Russian capital Saint Petersburg as early as 1861, a concession to build a line from Hanko to Hyvinkää on the line was awarded in 1869 after the completion of the Helsinki – Riihimäki – Hämeenlinna and Riihimäki – Saint Petersburg lines Helsinki – Riihimäki granted. For the line built in 1872/73, the private operating company procured two 1B locomotives each of the later D1 series and C series C3 locomotives built by Schwartzkopff as well as four 2'B locomotives that were supplied by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. Another five copies followed in 1873.
As usual with the Hangon rautatie , they were given the names of senior shareholders and Finnish cities (in Swedish ).
In 1875 the heavily indebted company was taken over by the Finnish state railways VR. There they were given the numbers 101 to 109, which, according to a resolution of 1879, were in the number range 101 to 200 for locomotives on the Hanko – Hyvinkää line. In 1887 the locomotives were added to the A4 series with the numbers 63 to 71.
