Valentinian dynasty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Valentinian Dynasty was a Roman ruling dynasty founded by Valentinian I in 364. In the west she went under with Valentinian II , in the east already with Valens .

The dynasty was inherited by the Theodosian dynasty (in the east after the death of Valens, in the west after the death of Valentinian II). The founder of the Theodosian dynasty, Theodosius I , was married to Galla , a daughter of Valentinian I, in his second marriage . From this marriage a daughter named Galla Placidia was born. In particular in Anglo-Saxon research, both families are therefore sometimes combined to form the Valentinian-Theodosian dynasty. So was Emperor Valentinian III. , the son of Galla Placidia, not only the grandson of Theodosius I, but also the great-grandson of Valentinian I.

Through Constantia , the daughter of Constantius II and Gratian's wife , the family was also connected to the Constantinian dynasty that preceded it.
