Vampire: The Eternal Struggle , originally published as Jyhad in the first or "Limited" Edition and often abbreviated as VTES , V: TES or V: tES , is a trading card game set in the World of Darkness . It was published by White Wolf Publishing .

The game was designed by Richard Garfield in 1994 . It was originally distributed by Wizards of the Coast and was the third trading card game to be launched. As the first successor to his successful trading card game Magic: The Gathering , he wanted to prove that games in this genre can be as diverse as board games. In 1995 the game was renamed from Jyhad to Vampire: The Eternal Struggle to differentiate itself from the Islamic term Jihad . After the 1996 Sabbat expansion, Wizards of the Coast stopped the game and in 2000 White Wolf took over the further development. Together with Magic: the Gathering , it is one of the oldest trading card games.

White Wolf ceased production of the game on September 10, 2010.

Richard Garfield noted that his experience with Magic: the Gathering helped him improve the game design. In an interview with Robert Goudie, Garfield referred to explicit multiplayer rules (3+), the omission of the "country cards" and a faster mechanism for drawing cards (cards are usually drawn directly after being played).
