Vanua Balavu ( βaˈnua mbaˈlaβu ) is the main island of the Lau Islands . The third largest of the Lau Islands is surrounded by an extensive coral reef and is of volcanic origin, which is still visible today in the form of hot springs. The 283 m high, 53 km² large and 21 km long, rugged island has about 1200 inhabitants.

About 250 people live in the main town of Vanua Balavu Lomaloma . The settlement has a Koprahafen, a small hospital and an airfield. For tourists, a large coastal cave located in the south of the island and inhabited in the Stone Age is worth seeing and the Yanuyanu Island Resort has been created.

The longtime Prime Minister and President of Fidji Kamisese Mara is from Vanua Balavu.
