Vasiliadis
Vasiliadis ( Greek Βασιλειάδης , also transcribed Basiliades , French: Societé Hellenique des Constructions Basiliades, English: Basiliades Engine & Shipbuilding CO. LTD) was a machine factory from Piraeus that existed until the 1960s.
Starting with a shipyard, Vasiliadis developed into the leading industrial group in Southeast Europe at the end of the 19th century. The product range included a wide range of locomotives and steam engines , cranes and bridges. Initially highly profitable, the company lost massive market shares in the 20th century . The industrial company did not seem worthy of support to the Greek state, but the products had to assert themselves against highly subsidized products from abroad, which never succeeded.
The group was broken up into sole proprietorships in 1963, one of which went into the Pyrkal armaments factory. The site of the headquarters is now part of the Piraeus Port Company. A street name is reminiscent of the group, as are the two dry docks that are maintained by the port company.
