The Vazhappally Maha Siva Temple (Malayalam: വാഴപ്പള്ളി വാഴപ്പള്ളി) is a Hindu temple in Vazhappally near Changanassery in the Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala . The temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board. It is believed that the temple was built by the first Chera king of Kodungallur. Legend has it that the installation of the idol Mahadeva ( Shiva ) was carried out by Parashurama himself. This temple is one of the 108 Shiva temples built by Parashurama. It is one of the few temples in Kerala that has two nalambalams and two flagpoles dedicated. The temple, a Grama Kshetra, also contains some wood carvings (Daru Silpas) from the 17th century depicting figures from epics . A Vattezhuttu inscription on the northern part of the base of the culture shrine indicates that the repairs were completed in the Kollam Age in 840 (1665 AD).

history

The early 9th century AD vazhappally copper plate is the earliest available inscription in Malayalamian. It is a temple committee resolution in the presence of the Chera king by Kodungallur Rama "Rajasekhara" (9th century AD). The inscription (incomplete) is engraved in an ancient form of Malayalam in Vattezhuthu and Grantha scripts. It was inscribed in sheet copper and represents an agreement between the administrators of the Vazhappally temple and 18 citizens of a place and also describes the punishment if the temple rituals for the Thiruvatta temple are not followed. This proclamation, understandably, served to strengthen the stature and status of the Vazhappally and Vazhappally Siva temples.
