from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vellalars (also, Velalars, Vellalas; Tamil : வேளாளர் Vēḷāḷar [ ˈʋɘːɭaːɭər ]) were originally an elite Tamil caste and landowners in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala as well as in neighboring Sri Lanka . They maintained good relations with various royal dynasties.

There are different views on the etymology of the word Vellalar . One theory postulates that the word Vellam (means "flood" in the Tamil language and alar ruler, ruler), Vellalar means something like "master of the floods".
