The association of fishery biologists and fisheries administration officials , which was founded in 1920 at the German Fisheries Day in Berlin , is considered to be the predecessor of the VDFF. Its existence already ended in 1922. With a circular from Wilhelm Koch , a loose working group of administrative officials working in the fishing industry was founded in 1948 . This defined itself with the first statute in 1952 as a working group of fisheries administration officials and fisheries scientists. After the reunification at the beginning of the 1990s, a nationwide association was formed due to the sudden influx of members and the desire to be entered in the register of associations in the 1992 general meeting in Lahnstein, which has had its current name since 1993.
