The Association of Single Mothers and Fathers (VAMV) is a non-profit interest group based in Berlin .

It operates on the principle of self-help, ie it offers families consisting of one parent and children (single parent families) help through information and advice. The VAMV works towards realizing the basic rights of equality and special protection of the family and the welfare state principle for single (including expectant) mothers and fathers and their children and to improve their living conditions.

history

The association was founded on July 8, 1967 in Herrenberg, Swabia, by Luise Schöffel as the "Association of Single Mothers" . In the Federal Republic of Germany there were 564,000 (7 percent of all families) "semi-families with children under 18 years" (statistical name). In 2007, the VAMV founded the European Network of Single Parent Families (ENoS) together with six single parent organizations from neighboring countries.

Main topics

The work of the association focuses on family law ( access rights , parental care , maintenance ), social law (unemployment, standard needs , subsistence level ), tax law (tax brackets, spouse splitting , deductibility of childcare costs ) and education ( child daycare , all-day schools, freedom from learning materials ). The VAMV makes proposals for changes to the law on these focal points, writes expert opinions for decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court, prepares statements on bills, takes part in hearings in the Bundestag, runs campaigns on relevant topics (e.g. the campaign to reduce VAT on products for children (2011) or a petition against child poverty (2016)) and is the organizer of a large annual conference. The VAMV offers further training courses and seminars for members, in particular to improve political communication and to deal with the new media.

As a lobbying association, the Federal Association 'influences legislation, uses its public relations work to point out the special situation of single parents and their children and, in collaboration with other nationwide organizations, institutions and associations, represents the interests of single parent families. Prizes for the VAMV Federal Association: German Youth Welfare Prize 1998, German Children's Rights Prize 2002, VAMV Internet portal is "Selected Location 2011" in the competition "365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas".

In 12 federal states, the regional associations maintain contact with ministries, organizations, institutions and parties in their federal state and specifically influence state legislation. They promote and support the establishment of local associations and contact points.

200 regional local associations and contact points serve single parents to exchange experiences and to provide mutual help and support. The offer of the local associations and regional contact points is based on the respective wishes and needs of its members on site. It ranges from discussion groups to information and advice to political campaigns to draw attention to local grievances - such as housing that is hostile to families and children and the lack of childcare facilities. The local associations carry out projects - mostly on childcare and the integration of single parents into the labor market.
