Association of Japanese Children's Book Authors

The Association of Japanese Children's Book Authors ( Japanese 一般 社 団 法人 日本 児 童文芸 家 協会 , Shadanhōjin Nihon Jidō Bungeika Kyōkai , English Japan Juvenile Writers Association ) was founded on May 7, 1955 as a professional association of children's book authors . As a legal and non-profit association, it was under the supervision of the Office for Cultural Affairs until July 2007 . In 2010 the association had around 490 members.

Overview

The association was founded in 1955 by the children's and youth author Hirosuke Hamada and managed until his death in 1973. Subsequently, Kiyoto Fukuda continued the work of Hamada for 20 years.

Every year the association awards four literary prizes to recognize the works of its members: since 1976 the prize of the Association of Japanese Children's Book Authors , since 1972 the prize for debutants of children's literature ( 児 童文芸 新人 賞 , Jidō Bungei Shinjinshō ), since 2005 the Fukuda Kiyoto Prize ( 福田 清人 賞 ) and since 1959 the prize for special merits in Japanese children's literature ( 日本 児 童 文化 功 労 賞 , Nihon Jidō Bunka Kōrōsha ). In addition, the association publishes every two months in its own magazine Jidō Bungei children's literature. Children's book authors are organized nationwide in individual association groups.
