Verb dictionary
A verb lexicon is a lexicographical representation of the verbs of one or more languages with reference to their grammatically correct usage.
For example, it lists which valence (linguistics) and verb arguments (e.g. preposition ) they have. This is how you can find out whether a verb is transitive , bi-transitive or intransitive . Hence one differentiates:
- single-digit (intransitive) verbs with subject argument (nominative ( she is sleeping. ))
- two-digit verbs with subject argument and direct object argument (accusative) transitive ( He loves you. ); with subject argument and indirect object argument (dative) ( She helps him. ); with subject argument and prepositional phrase ( you are driving home. )
- three-digit verbs with subject argument, indirect and direct object argument, bi-transitive ( She gives him a rose ); with subject argument, direct object argument and prepositional phrase ( She puts her hat on the bed ) etc.
For example, for French it is interesting that it is called échapper à qc (and not échapper de qc).
There are verbal dictionaries in print form or as electronic editions. Extensive electronic verb dictionaries contain all conjugation forms and thus up to 1 million entries.
