history
The consumer protection agency has its roots in an academic initiative to support socially disadvantaged citizens. As a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the associated increased demand for scientifically sound advice on possible radioactive contamination of food, the advisory activity is expanded. The formulated goal from then on is education and information for the general public, especially consumers, as well as protection of the interests of consumers through education, information and advice.
In contrast to the consumer centers organized at state level, the consumer protection agency is not subordinate to any umbrella organization. The consumer telephones and advice services are free of charge nationwide.
