Use-by date

The use- by date is the date from which foodstuffs that are microbiologically perishable and which could pose an immediate danger to human health after a short period of time (e.g. minced meat , raw poultry meat ), may no longer be sold.

It indicates by when the food should be consumed, the legally required labeling is: "use by ..." . In Germany, placing on the market after the use-by date is prohibited. In addition, the storage conditions to be observed must be specified.

The use-by date must be separated from the best-before date (recommended use-by period), which specifies the point at which the seller ceases to guarantee the quality of the product. However, the food is still marketable .

The legal basis is Annex X of the Food Information Regulation . Until 2017, Section 7a of the Food Labeling Ordinance also applied to Germany .
