Association of Franco-German Societies for Europe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of German-French Societies for Europe eV (VDFG) is a German umbrella organization of German-French societies and associations.

It is a non-partisan and non-denominational association, which has its French counterpart in the “Fédération des Associations Franco-Allemandes pour l'Europe” (FAFA), with which it has formed a unit since it was founded in 1957.

Its current 140 members include Franco-German societies, partnership associations of Franco-German municipal partnerships, "Clubs d'Affaires" and German-French choirs. More than 20,000 citizens interested in France are united in the member organizations. Membership is open to all associations and institutions as well as natural and legal persons.

The purpose of the association is to consolidate and deepen Franco-German cooperation by promoting the Franco-German societies and their youth groups as well as other members in both countries. The activities of the association extend in particular to cultural, economic, social and political areas that serve the image of the partner country as well as Franco-German relations and efforts towards European unification. VDFG and FAFA organize a joint congress each year (alternatively in Germany or France) on a key topic and an exchange of experiences for all members.

In memory of the unifying work of its founding president and later honorary president Elsie Kühn-Leitz , the association has been awarding the Elsie Kühn Leitz Prize for outstanding services to Franco-German cooperation and European unification since 1986 (usually every two years) .

The VDFG (like all member organizations) is led by an honorary board. The incumbent president of the VDFG is Margarete Mehdorn, who was elected at the 2016 congress in Chambéry. The VDFG is advised by a board of trustees.
