Ministry of Unification

The South Korean Ministry of Unification ( Korean : 통일부 , Hanja : 統一 部) is the ministry responsible for the relationship between South and North Korea . The Minister-designate is Lee In-young . The number of employees is around 250.

history

In 1969 the authority for regional unification was founded, in 1990 it was upgraded to an agency for unification, in 1998 it became an independent ministry after the election of Kim Dae-jung as president. In 2008, the newly elected President Lee Myung-bak initially considered abolishing the Ministry of Unification completely, before drastically reducing the size of the organization. Since the beginning of the Moon Jae-in government, the Unification Ministry has again played a more central role.
