Available name

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Zoology one is available Name ( English available name ) is a scientific name for a taxon of animals, according to all the necessary requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature was the creation of a zoological name published.

In order for a name to be available there are a number of general requirements that must be met:

  • Only the Latin alphabet may be used;
  • it must be published in a timely manner in a respected publication; etc.

In some rare cases, a name that does not meet these criteria may also be available for historical reasons.

An available name is not necessarily an accepted name ( english valid name ) because an available name a synonym can be. On the other hand, an accepted name must also be an available one.

Contrast to botany

In the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants that term is not used; it corresponds to the "valid published names" ( English validly published name ) in botany. The botanical equivalent of the zoological term “valid name” is “correct name” .
