Foreign Language Literature Publishing House (Moscow)

The publishing house for foreign-language literature in Moscow ( Russian Издательство литературы на иностранных языках) was founded in March 1931 under the name "Publishing Cooperative of Foreign Workers in the USSR" (Издательстых . In 1963 it was merged with the publishing house for foreign literature (Издательства иностранной литературы) and renamed the publishing house Progress (Прогресс).

In the 1970s, the publisher was still issuing books in around forty languages ​​on a wide variety of topics, from Marxist classics and Soviet propaganda material to children's books, scientific works and fiction. The majority of the books were translations from Russian, but many works were also published in the original language. In 1974 alone 950 titles appeared with a total circulation of 24.1 million copies.
