The Ferry Operation Ordinance (FäV) is an ordinance of the Federal Republic of Germany that regulates the operation and supervision of ferries on federal waterways as well as the behavior of ferry staff and ferry users.

In particular, it obliges the ferry owner or the ferry driver to

  • to have the ferry checked at least every two and a half years by the competent waterways and shipping authorities;
  • To publish timetables by posting them at the landing stages and on the ferry and to notify them to the Waterways and Shipping Office before they come into force;
  • to only use those landing stages that are approved by the Waterways and Shipping Office;
  • To ensure that the load capacity of the ferry is not exceeded;
  • to distribute the vehicles on the ferry in such a way that the ferry remains stable and that the vehicle occupants can get on and off at any time;
  • to raise the landing flaps sufficiently before starting the journey and to keep the prescribed locking devices closed during the journey;
  • to open only the landside entrances when docking and to close them again after casting off;
  • to put up a notice on the ferry that prohibits unauthorized persons from entering the driver's cab and the engine room;
  • to illuminate the ferry sufficiently when it is dark;
  • stop ferry traffic if translating is risky;
  • to display the wording of the Ferry Operation Ordinance at the landing stages and on the ferry.

The ferry users are obliged by the Ferry Operating Ordinance

  • to follow the instructions of the ferry staff;
  • drive onto the ferry so slowly that you can stop at any time;
  • turn off the engine on the ferry, put on the handbrake and turn off the lights.
