The decay (also rotting ), Vermoderung or rotting is the decomposition of organic plant material usually mainly humus , carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and water (H 2 O). The microbial breakdown of animal material is called putrefaction . The following processes are assigned to rotting:

  • Putrefaction , anaerobic (oxygen-free) decomposition (mostly in nature).
  • Composting , aerobic (with access to air) decomposition in agriculture and horticulture.
  • Roasting , the breakdown of lignins and pectins without damaging the plant fibers.

Depending on the temperature that results from the self-heating, one speaks of hot rot (at around 60 to 70 ° C) or below this temperature of cold rot .
