Defense Council of the Soviet Union

The Defense Council of the USSR was the highest body responsible for the management of national defense in the USSR from 1955 to 1991.

The body was established by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in accordance with Article 121, Item 4 of the Constitution of the USSR . Its forerunners were the Council for Labor and Defense , headed by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin , and the State Defense Committee of the USSR at the time of the German-Soviet War .
