In-depth work

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The in- depth work (VA for short) is the final thesis of general education (ABU) in Swiss vocational schools. Originally this work was known as Independent In-Depth Work (SVA) , and is often confused with it.

General

The general education teacher can freely choose a guiding theme, this should encourage the students to think creatively. The pupils have to choose any topic that fits the main theme and work out a concept that is presented to the teacher. If they approve the concept, the real work can begin.

From 2018, the main topic and the sub-topic can be chosen by yourself.

Requirement profile

The requirements of the in-depth work are completely different from canton to canton, from school to school and from teacher to teacher.

General trade school Basel-Stadt

documentation

The documentation must consist of 30 (± 5) pages. The font size is set to 12 and there may be a maximum of ¼ of the image. At least half of the work should consist of a practical part ( survey , field study , interviews, etc.). The appendix includes the concept and schedule drawn up at the beginning of the work and the fixed point protocols from the specified interim discussions. These three documents are provided by the school in the form of Word templates. Finally, there is a reflection on the work.

presentation

The vocational school students have to give a presentation to the class and the examiner (class teacher) and the expert (other general education teacher ) approximately two weeks after submitting their work , but this presentation may only be 10 minutes long. Every group member has to contribute equally to it. The practical and theoretical parts must be equally divided among the speakers.

Exam interview

After the presentation, there is an examination interview between the group members and the examiner and the expert. In this conversation the teachers ask questions about the content of the documentation and the reflection on the work, which the students answer.

Sample in-depth work

In connection with the in-depth work, a sample in-depth work (PVA) is often written a year beforehand. With 15 pages, this is only half the size of the actual thesis. Here, too, a key topic is chosen by the teacher, for which the students develop a concept and then work out the PVA with a schedule and interview. The presentation at the PVA may not be longer than 10 minutes. The PVA can be completed as a group or individual work.
